TAYLOR - MILLER - EVANS
Bill Taylor Fri, 02 Jan 1998 10:12:52
Looking for any info on my Taylor ancestors. My g-g-grandfather William Littleberry TAYLOR (1838-????) lived in Lauderdale Co., AL from late 1850's to around 1880. His wife was Sarah MILLER. They lived at one time in Westmorelandville, which I have not been able to locate. After Sarah's death around 1880, William took the kids and moved to northeastern MS. He got married again, this time to Mary Jane EVANS, and I think it was before he left Lauderdale Co. William's only surviving son from his marriage to Sarah MILLER (that I know about) was my g-grandfather William Samuel TAYLORY (1862-1917). That's basically all I have, so any info will be appreciated.

PHILLIPS, LAIRD
Sanders PHILLIPS (born about 1812/NC) was listed in the 1850 Lauderdale County Census - with his second wife, Sarah LAIRD and children from both marriages. Sanders and Sarah were married in Lauderdale County. Children from the first marriage (I don't know mother's name) was Elias (born about 1839), Amanda (born about 1840), and Daniel (born about 1842). Amanda moved on to Mississippi as well as Sarah and her children; however, what happened to Sanders PHILLIPS? and are there descendants or researchers who can connect to Elias or Daniel? I have almost nothing on the LAIRD line, but it has surfaced as LARD and LAIR before. Did Elias or Daniel stay in Alabama? Anybody, help! Thanks.

SNODDY - FUQUA - ALEXANDER
Carol Snoddy Byler Sat, 18 Apr 1998 11:17:55
Looking for ANY information on William SNODDY, Jr. (1789-1825). Married Elizabeth Mumford FUQUA. William signed his will on April 7, 1825 in Lauderdale County, AL, and it was proven on May 11, 1825 by his brother, Graham, who was living in Lincoln County at that time. William left all his estate to his father-in-law, Archibald FUQUA. In a letter from William Mason Snoddy (grandson of William), dated July 7, 1912, he states, "My mother told me that William SNODDY was called back to Kelso, Tennessee on some business about 1825 and was taken sick and died very soon in a few hours. She told me he was married to a Miss ALEXANDER before he was married to my Grandmother and had one child named Margaret I. Snoddy [my records show Elizabeth Margaret Snoddy] who left this country with her uncle an old bachelor when she was small and went to Texas and married and her husband was killed by the Indians and she married a second time but she did not know what became of her." So, it is assumed that William Snoddy died at Kelso, Tennessee, and that possibly, he is buried at the Old Rocky Point Cemetery (also known as the Snoddy Cemetery). It hasn’t been established as to what happened to William’s daughter by Elizabeth Alexander. Thank you.

Saltworks of Gallatin Co IL - HILL - COLBERT
Jon Musgrave Tue, 5 May 1998 23:05:52 -0500
I am researching the government saltworks of Gallatin County, Illinois. These are immediately north of Lauderdale County, Alabama. Someone recently sent me a newspaper clipping from 1930 that gave some of their family history. It noted that "Jess Hill, served as a government ranger for quite a while to guard the ox wagon caravans in hauling salt from the salt works near Equality, Ill. to Florence, Ala. They had to be guarded from the bushwacking attacks of skulking Indians." The article later dates this event as 1818, or one or two years earlier since Jess' brother moved from Georgia to Illinois in 1818, following one of Jess' trips. Has anyone ever come across information about these salt caravans? Who was living at Florence at this date. Is this area still a part of Cherokee/Chickasaw lands at this time?
Also, I am looking for a descendent list of Chickasaw leader Capt. James Logan Colbert, who arrived in America from Soctland in January 1736 and died in November 1784 on his way to persuade other chiefs to switch sides from the King to the Americans. There are Colberts at the saltworks early from Alabama, but I am missing the generations to connect.
Third, in my research I have noticed a number of free blacks from Lauderdale County filing emancipation and other freedom papers in the Gallatin County, Illinois, slave registries.
Thank you. Check out my Southern Illinois History Page [The URL previously given here is no longer valid.]
GREENHAW - HENRY - BRIDGES - FOSTER - ETHRIDGE - BAKER - SHULER
GibsonHamm Thu, 7 May 1998 17:47:00 EDT
I am looking for information on the GREENHAW, GREENHOW, GREEHSHAW, GREENSHOW family.
Jonathan GREENHAW, Sr. (maybe spelled GREENHOW, GREENSHOW, GREENHOW or GREENAUGH), was born in 1757 in Williamsburg, VA and died 1826 in Limestone County, AL. He was a preacher at Reunion First Christian Church. He married twice, Rachel HENRY in 1768 or 1700 and Ann -----, date unknown. Rachel and Jonathan had nine children and moved from Virginia to Caswell County, North Carolina in 1790 and then later to Tennessee and Alabama in the Huntsville area.
Two of Jonathan's sons were Greenberry GREENHAW, born between 1775 and 1794, died 1825 or 26 in Alabama, and Ephraim Barton GREENHAW, born 1-10-1818 in Lauderdale County, Florence, Alabama, died 3-1-1905 in Mt. Judea, Arkansas. Greenberry married twice, first wife unknown, second wife, Sarah "Sally" BRIDGES, married on 6-13-1813 in Sumner County, Tennessee. They had four children, names and information unknown.
Ephraim Barton GREENHAW, one of my direct descendents, married Angeline FOSTER on 9-12-1838 in Lawrence County, Tenneesee. They had three children, names and information unknown.
Ephraim Barton GREENHAW then married Rebecca ETHRIDGE on 3-12-1846 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. This is my direct family line. Rebecca was born on 12-11-1820 and died 2-17-1898. She was the daughter of Matthew and Mary ETHRIDGE who lived in Lawrence County, Tennessee when Matthew died. Mary then moved to Searcy County, Arkansas where she died in the 1870's.
Matthew ETHRIDGE was the son of Thomas ETHRIDGE born about 1775 in North Carolina but moved to Lawrence County, Tennessee in about 1816. he was apparently a wealthy plantation owner and money lender and died 10-15-1855.
One of Ephraim and Rebecca's children, and my direct descendant, is George W. GREENHAW, born 10-5-1839 and died 10-26-1907. I am assuming that he was born in Lawrence County, but do not know this for certain.
Ephraim and Rebecca's other children that I know about and think are really the children of this couple are: Franklin Marion GREENHAW, born 8-19-1848, probably in Lawrence County, died March 18, 1913. He married Margaret C. BAKER. Tennessee GREENHAW, born September 01, 1854, died February 27, 1906. Andrew Jackson GREENHAW, born April 3, 1865. Married Caroline SHULER. There may be other children from the ETHRIDGE/GREENHAW marriage.
I would like to obtain/share information regarding these GREENHAWs and their spouses.

CRYMES/CRIMES - TOMLINSON - CROW - HARRISON - GARRETT - BAELOUS - REYNOLDS - WILKES
Date: Sat, 11 Jul 1998 20:41:05 EDT
From: FVESTAL@aol.com
Would apprciate ANY reference to the name CRYMES/CRIMES in the 1840s/1850s in Lauderdale Co., AL or any of the surrounding areas. An adult John CRIMES/CHRIMES/CRYMES is found on a 1850, Lauderdale Co., AL Trust Deed with William TOMLINSON & Isaac T. CROW. Another reference is made in 1851, when two indentures are recorded between John CRYMES/CRIMES and John HARRISON & Calvin GARRETT and, the second, with Reed T. GARRETT & Calvin W. GARRETT. In 1853, John CRYMES/CRIMES marries Amanda BAELOUS in Lauderdale Co., AL. No other record has been located for this adult CRYMES. He appears to vanish after the 1853 marriage and was NEVER recorded on a census of the area.
My maternal great grandfather, John CRYMES, was born in AL (presumably Lauderdale Co.) in July 1949. He wasn't found on the 1850 census; but, he appears on the 1860 census in the household of A. P. REYNOLDS. In 1878, John marries Ellen D. REYNOLDS (neice of A. P. REYNOLDS). After Ellen's death, John marries Ann WILKES in 1892, Lauderdale Co., AL. John CRYMES died in 1915, St. Florian, Lauderdale Co., AL and is buried by his grandson, Tommie Lee CRYMES, at Piney Grove Cemetery, Lauderdale Co., AL. If anyone has ANY information on this illusive family, I would appreciate their assistance. THANK YOU!! Linda Mayfield Vestal

HOLLIS - JEFFCOAT - HOVIS/OVIS

From: "Chuck Hollis" dakota6657@gmail.com
I am looking for anyone with information about Hollis ancestors from Alabama who may be related to William Curtis
HOLLIS.
My grandfather, William Curtis HOLLIS, was born in Alabama, possibly in or near the town of Anderson, Lauderdale County (Northern Alabama) in 1893. His family migrated to Texas around the turn of the century in a (covered?) wagon. The family spread out in East Texas in the early years of the century. I know he had a brother Joe and a sister, possibly "Icie" or "Icey". Joe lived in Newton, Newton County, TX, and was a barber there for many years. About 1915, William Curtis, married my grandmother, Martha Jane "Mattie" JEFFCOAT, who was born in Tyler County, Texas. They ultimately settled for keeps in Tyler County near the very small town of Spurger. That was about 1929. My father, William Edward HOLLIS, was about 5 yrs old then. He was born in Evadale, Jasper County, Texas. Also, William Curtis told me that his (g-?)grandmother's maiden name was HOVIS or OVIS and she was born in Cologne, Germany.
Any help greatly appreciated,
Happy Trails,
Chuck Hollis

From: "Carolyn M. Getting" <jgetting@ix.netcom.com>
James MARTIN died ca 1835 in McLean Co., IL. Documents from the Estate show a Reubin MARTIN heir at law, with wife Elizabeth, children: Rhoda MARTIN m Jesse B. WOOTTEN 11 Jan 1844 Lauderdale Co AL, Mary MARTIN m Peter R. GARNER 9 Dec 1845 Lauderdale Co AL, Jane MARTIN, Ann MARTIN, James P. MARTIN and Asberry MARTIN. A power of attorney was filed in McLean Co., IL in 1849, at which time, Reubin was already dead.
James MARTIN, who is apparently the father of Reubin MARTIN bought land in
1831 in McLean Co., IL and from descriptions, etc it was at or around
Randolphs Grove, IL. Mary MARTIN (my Line) who married William B. MARSHALL on 6 Jan 1817 in Wilkes Co., NC (marriage Bond, James MARTIN Bondsman & W. W. MARTIN, wit.)was also an Heir at law, and filed a power of attorney, first in 1837, given to Jesse MARTIN and in 1841, to David WILSON. A Deed to Rachel KARR in 1851 includes some of the land bought by James MARTIN in 1851 and is signed by the relict of Reubin MARTIN and her children by Power of Attorney filed earlier.
A Francis MARTIN is on one document, but it looks like he may have died
right after the settlement of the Estate began, and a Franklin MARTIN and
wife Mary are on a document assigning their rights to a Hiram BUCK for
administration of their rights in the estate. Any information on this family will be greatly appreciated.
