HERRIN / HERRON / HERON - HANCOCK - BRYANT
Date: 17 Mar 2004
From: Howard Bryant
My great grandfather, Elisha Herrin (Heron, Herron) moved to the Wrights area some-time just before 1880. The photo at the left was taken from an old tin type photo. He was dressed in a formal suit ant this may have been a wedding portrait. Guessing at his age at the time, it was probably made in the 1850’s or 60’s. I have located his census record there in 1880, as well as his 1870 record in Lincoln County, GA. He had a number of children, two of whom were born in Lincoln County, William E. or Lee and Lila or Sarah L. Most of the others were born in TN, believed to be in the Big Sandy area of Benton County, GA. One was born in Lauderdale County.
Most of the children remained in Lauderdale County at least up until the 1920’s, including my grandfather, Charley Marshall Herrin/Herron, seated on the right. Seated in the center is Elisha’s wife, Louisa or Lizzie Hancock Herron. I don’t know the date of this picture but my speculation is that it may have been made at Elisha’s funeral but judging by the age of the youngest of his daughters, t may have been the mid to late 1890’s. So far I have not been able to locate the burial place of either Elisha or Louisa in the Lauderdale cemetery records. I’ve located census records from 1900 to 1920 for all of the family members except his oldest son, William E (or Lee) Herron. So far I can’t find a match anywhere – I don’t know what given name he used or where he might have moved.
At the left is a photo, almost certain to be William E/L Herrin/Herron and his family. Judging by the age of his children, it must have been made in the early 1900’s. the ages of his children, 6 sons and one daughter. (I also have pictures of Elisha, his wife, and all the children at different ages, except William.) I would like to post this information in the hope someone may be able to give me a lead to follow up on William.
My mother was the daughter of Charley Herrin/Herron of Wrights; my father’s family lived across the river in Riverton. My mother’s brother also married into the Bryant family.
I would appreciate any information about William E/L Herrin/Herron and the burial places of Elisha and Louisa. I would also appreciate any information about Elisha and Louisa’s descendents who may still live in the area. Howard Bryant
WINTTER - KACHELHOFER - REDDIN - HALBERG
Date: 17 Mar 2004
From: John Wintter
I have a grandfather, Ernst (Earnest, Ernest) Ulrich WINTTER and a grandmother, Lidia Louise Carline ( Lena) KACHELHOFER (? HALBERG) who lived in Florence, as reported in the 1880 census (for Earnest WINTTER). No report of Kachelhofer's
in Lauderdale Co. was found in that census. Earnest was married to Martha Susan REDDIN who died later in the year after the census was taken in 1880.
Earnest married Lena Halberg (Kachelhofer) in 1881 and they moved to Brighton (Lipscomb?) AL and were found in the 1900 census there. I am interested in finding something about Lena's marriage to Joseph Halberg prior to her marriage to Earnest WINTTER. Earnes was born in Wuerttemberg Germany 18 45 and emigrated to the USA in 1863. Lena was born in 1858 in Interlaken, Bern Switzerland and emigrated to the USA in 1868. Any information about the Lauderdale residency of these two (or their parents, siblings, etc.) would be appreciated. Thanks John Ernest Wintter jwintte@bellsouth.net

HALSEY - NANCE - REEDER - JONES
From: Lee Freeman
Date: 19 May 2004
Seeking information on the connection between the family of William Henry Nance (1845-1903), of Russellville, AL, and the families of Orlando Halsey (c. 1839-aft. 1910), of Tuscumbia, AL, and William Lee Reeder (c.1865-1918)), of Florence. One of W. H. Nance’s obituaries states that Orlando Halsey’s wife, Mary Katherine Jones (1841-1929), a daughter of James Oscar and Elizabeth Benham Jones was a sister of W. H. Nance, another says she and her sister, Mrs. W. L. Reeder, were his nieces. We know William Henry had two brothers, Lucas (c. 1848-1890) and John A. (b. ca. 1851), but do not have any information on a sister.
Mary Katherine had a sister, Patti Jones (c. 1869-aft. 1920), who married William Lee Reeder of Florence, and at least one brother, J. Oscar Jones. According to her obit. Mary Katherine Jones Halsey was born in Marion County. In 1892, W. L.. Reeder worked for W. H. Nance, who was a cotton buyer. What is the relationship of Mary Katherine Jones Halsey and Patti Reeder to W. H. Nance? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Lee Freeman. TBLarimore@comcast.net
